How much I like the idea of having private journals for everyone, I would really like to be able to reply to people's stories. It's frustrating not to be able to sometimes

It can be frustrating, but I know what I've done (and a few others) is post a reply in my journal specifying who and what I'm replying to.
Not sure how this forum software runs, but Brf would know if it's possible to allow each user to be moderator of their own particular section and give permission for a post to be added to their thread prior to it getting posted. The writer would get notice that they have a request to post and once they approved it, it would show up for others to see.

Ok, follow this train of thought.
If you are mini-blogging about something you might wish to interact with others about then simply don't mini-blog it.
Or if you see something in a mini-blog and want to talk then bring it up in the proper conversational area.
The only kind of rules I've made about the Great Hall consisted of matters of good taste and not to use it when a more subject appropriate board would be better.
But you can pretty much just start a topic there about anything.
Take Nibby's hair color. Yes, she mini-blogged about it.
But Mel is big on talking about it. So Mel can simply start a thread in the Great Hall and shout Cool Hair, Nibby!
This isn't school or the military. We subdivide and organize here to defer chaos, not to regiment or train you.
The mini-blogs exist so people can post without requiring to talk about it in a conversational setting. It's cathartic for some people.
Some people can't benefit from the relaxing joys of strangling small defenseless mammals like I do.

Thing is, with the modding controls, everyone would have to have their own board, not just a thread, and everyone wanting to have their own board would have to have mod rights elsewhere, at least in the mod forum.
