|
|
First things first: I downloaded the Condemned:Criminal Origins demo for my laptop. I went to fire it up and it froze. So I shut off the computer. I went to log into my account and a message of how the profile was possibly corrupted showed up. It took me to a makeshift profile where I was able to set a new perminant one up
My question is: can I fix this, or are all my pictures, documents, saved webpages gone and I should just cut loose and start over?
please say its the first one... |

| As long as you are a local admin, you should be able to access your old profile. If you right-click on your Start-button and choose "Explore" it will be browsing your new profile. Your old profile should be a couple of directories up. |

| actaually, depending, it might be irretrievable. try BRF's solution, if that doesn't work, then you're pretty much stuffed. |

If you are logged in as a local admin, you should be able to right-click on a file or folder that you cannot access, and take ownership of it.
Choose the "security" tab and click the "Advanced" button.
Then choose the "owner" tab and change the owner to you.
You should then be able to access the folder. |

I actually got most of the files I wanted to off the old profile (using a pen drive and just switching between the two), but is there a way to save it or is it FUBAR?
also, the dead profile is the "owner" of the laptop. Will I run into any undesireable effects if I do in fact decide to nuke it? |

| Usually, when a profile is screwed up, it is the user.dat user registry that is corrupt. If you can rescue your personal files from the old profile directories, you should be better off using the new clean profile than trying to fix the old one. |

Back up, back up, back up. I have an external hard drive for my stuff, and every week I back up my preferences for Firefox, Thunderbird, Trillian, and other programs.
Once it's gone, though, I have no suggestions for recovery, it's all hindsight. |

| thankfully, most of the stuff, I either have the original installation disk for, or have the download for, the remainder of the stuff came with the PC, or isn't anythign I really care about. and firefox's preferences survived, just not the .exe file. sometimes, not having a derfagmented volume can be useful  |
