Everyone has probably noticed a significant change in your ribbon bars with the shifting of membership ribbons to those micro ribbons at the bottom.
The impetus was to give more value to the concept of participation here.
We have a fair number of participation ribbons already, but I'm shooting for more.
This is your chance to give your input.
You may have seen the new OMR ribbon on Nibby's ribbon bar. It's for significant work online away from this site. I'll be sure to update the ribbon legend thread soon and you'll see the criteria for earning it.
While discussing the criteria, the staff thought of the concept of rewarding recruitment here as a worthy ribbon criteria. So expect to see us work out a ribbon for that as well.
Then I thought perhaps a ribbon for debating in the Chopping Block for people who conform well to my debate standards and regularly join in the debates there.
Then I noted I was contemplating two new ribbons and figured a member conversation on the topic was in order.
I will not promise to approve every half baked ribbon idea, but ideas with real merit will be brought before the staff for consideration. I'm not interested in minor efforts as I hope that members feel that being part of a community means giving a bit of their time and effort. Nor am I interested in variations on similar existing themes. A bit of original thought please. Save the variants for staff discussions.
So think it over and see if ideas for participation reward come to mind.
On a last note, I'd like to publicly notice Brf's efforts on the ribbon changeover. He pretty much did all the shoveling while I tossed out the directions. A pretty one sided effort on his part. So this note is about credit where credit is due. Throw in the recent rank avatar updates and he's been pretty busy here lately. It might be time to cough up an Achievement ribbon for him. Alas, he will likely have to design the ribbon for that as well. :? |

What?!? Only 9 reads and no comments?
You guys don't want any more ribbons?
Then at least get your butts in here and commend Brf for all his work. :? |

I know how much hard work goes into keeping any site up and running, so I'm happy to commend all involved for all aspects of that.
Now, I thought better about saying the next bit and then figured I would anyway because it might just stimulate a response for you JJ :)
Are people actually bothered about these ribbons? They are a nice idea, don't get me wrong, but I can't say I pay them any attention at all. I don't even know what the couple that appear after my posts are for, nevermind everyone elses.
I would hate for you to spend time on something people aren't really engaged with, but maybe it's just me, and everyone else thinks differently. If so, it wouldn't be the first time lol
Now I'll just step quietly back and wait for the responses disagreeing with me, telling you how much they love them and what other things they want them for ;) |

I'm quite sure that every member puts differing weight to the importance of ribbons here.
But other than post count rank, which members handle on their own, there isn't much that the staff can do online to reward effort here.
Ribbons we can do, however.
We also hope a little friendly competition will inspire members to build their ribbon bars.
The result being that if many of our members are sporting sizeable ribbon bars that the forum will also be an active site with plenty of activity. Thus spuring more activity.
Yep, it's one big plot on my part. |

Those small ribbons are membership ribbons.
You don't earn them and they are not relevant to the paticipatory ribbons discussion.
You've either been there already or you haven't.
If you have not already been a member of those places then you can't get them anymore. |
