Saw the movie today with my nephew.
He's a red blooded American gun and war movie buff.
He walked out of there a bit shaky and wondered why I was laughing so much.
Because it really isn't a war movie. Like Full Metal Jacket, it's a story about the headcase all we Marines get. It just happens to have a war in the background for color.
Want to know why perfectly normal Americans become crazed killers at low government pay?
Watch both movies and you'll know why.
There are times I wonder why we don't send those like us to special Pacific islands afterwards after we are released from service. We just aren't ever really part of society properly again.
Like the movie states up front, after a man has trained with a gun in his hand for so long, for the rest of his life while his hands build a house, change a diaper, or caress a wife, those hands still know what the gun feels like in them. The hands never forget the feel of deadly steel.
So watch both movies. You may never understand why I laugh at the stuff that seems to shock everyone else, but at least you'll know why I'll never be quite right again in the head. |
