Ok, this community is filled with people who wish that someone, anyone, would remake Tropico.

But what other games of the past do you think should be given new life?

Let's confine our suggestions to games that are 4 years or more old. I figure that games that slip that long may never come back.

So here are my suggestions.

Pax Imperia. A grand game in it's time that was cutting edge. A classic long lasting resource empire game that was galactic in scale. You settled worlds, built them up to powerhouses, and battled other space empires in fleet battles. The guy who made this was as prominent as Sid Mieir back then. He had grand plans that developers were begging to make, but he went sideways into business programming shortly thereafter and slipped off the gaming radar.

Dune Emperor. It was the last installment of several RTS games of that name. A true Westwood RTS in the C&C tradition. RTS has really taken a beating lately, but the Dune series gave us a deep wellspring of material that could easily be brought up to date. With all the books and games done on this niche genre there must be some facet of it that should excite today's game designers.

These are some taken directly from my game drive that I still play.

Colonization - Basically it is the colonial period of the North American continent where you have free control over everything and build your nation. It's like Civ, but more on economy than technology.

Covert Action - This was a more obscure game where you were a spy. Very fun game!

Darklands - a truly epic game from 1992 I think where you have medieval Germany and you (and three friends) are adventurers. It was very realistic and had a story line, but you could completely ignore it and act at will.

Jones in the Fast Lane - this is a really old one from 1990 I think. Basically it is about career. You guide a sim through a career starting out as a burger flipper, going through life, educating yourself, buying things, and making something of yourself. Again, it's a lot more fun than it sounds.

Master of Magic - Basically Civilization with magic and magical creatures instead of technology. I think 1993. It is a lot better than it sounds.

Shadow President - this is a more obscure title, from 1992 where you are the president of the US. You can control the budget of the US, but the real goal is foreign relations. It literally is open to the player to set the course of the world. Want to try to achieve global peace? Want to establish Pax Americana? Ever dreamed of having the US conquer all of a continent? Want to take out the Russians once and for all? It's up to you. Never been matched since.

Simtower - designing your own building, much like Simcity

Wasteland - a game set in the post-apocalyptic future back in 1987. True classic and never has really been touched other than by the Fallout series.

A hint - If you look up the word "abandonware" on a search engine you can dig up these and many other treasures out there that even today's players might like.

Fallout, huh?

While I never fell for the whole RPG genre, I did surprise myself when I got lost in the whole Morrowind culture. I mention this because I hear the company that does Morrowind bought the rights to create the next Fallout series. If they build it the same way as their Morrowind games then it should be a great base for a game that the modding community can expand into incredible proportions. Keep an eye out for this upcoming game. It could be excellent.

But I did buy a derivative of the Fallout RPG, called Fallout tactics. It was terrific! It was actually a small unit strategy game, where you roamed the wasteland with your squad conquering regions. It did have a small element of RPG in that your squad members slowly increased and got new skills. But it was clearly a god's-eye-view battle game of movement and attacks. It was also very unique in that you could play it either turn based or RTS. You could even switch between the two modes at any point in the game.

It had an incredible game engine to pull all this off and I'm upset that no one ever tried to make a comparable game again under any game theme. About the only knock against it was that it was pretty buggy upon release and required a lot of patching before they got it stable. The combined patch is pretty huge (20+ megs) for a game that old. But it's all fixed up if you want to buy the game. I imagine you can get it for bargain rates at Amazon these days. Your shipping might be the bigger expense. It's a really challenging game that is real value as it can take days of straight playing just to force yourself down the fastest path to the conclusion. But since time is not a factor in the game storyline and you can go anywhere you want on the continent, you can drag a game out for even weeks. It even has an editor so you can add more scenarios into the storyline.

Lots of time, low money, post-apocalyptic desires? Go hunt this one down.

This one could really use a sequel.

Never bought Fallout 1 & 2?

Best RPG's made for PC imho.

The moment a small kid came to me in town asking for help to find his dog, me telling him to get out of my way and finding him dead in the desert with his dog in his arms a few days later still gives me the creeps.
