I guess it's time to admit it.
I'm playing a fantasy rpg and am hooked.
The sheer breadth of Morrowind is amazing.
I've put hundreds of hours into this game and haven't found the limits.
Actually, long before you explore and conquer it all, your character has become too powerful to make it a challenge. I'd say running 3 characters in succession would get you acquainted with every square inch. My guess is that would take someone most of a year if they gave it an hour every day. And then you have 2 expansion sets that pretty much doubles the original game.
Lastly, there is a community online that is huge for this single player game. And a construction set that while wickedly complicated allows someone to literally build entire cities with every last detail. And this community cranks out unofficial stuff prodigiously. Someone could play this crazy game for years and not run out of stuff.
You simply can't believe the rendering in this game. Jaw dropping. The views are incredible. I can't even believe desktop computers can really do this stuff yet. But there it is.
Other than the Stronghold 2nd edition, I don't expect to be buying many games for the next year, if any at all.
I still love 3rd person strategy, but I haven't seen much on the horizon that interests me for quite some time. If not for the makers of Stronghold, I'd figure the game makers had forgotten my type of play.
Anyone else play Morrowind yet? |

Agggh!
We're in trouble now!
Both Admins will be Morrowind addicts!
I sure hope this place can run itself for the next year.
I'm happy I paid the rent up too.

Copied from estioland:
Joe:
Well, I'm not a fan of rpg's, but I got the disc free for buying my pc.
But what good is a disc with no basic manual?
I played a few minutes and got killed by a common rat because I couldn't even access my pathetic daggar.
Sure, I figured it out later, but even the basic controls are beyond me most of the time.
A trip to google is irritating. Too many Morrowind sites. Using "manual" or "game manual" gets me mixed sites. Quoting the whole thing yields zilch. Dropping by the developer's site yields tons of robot help, but no online manual.
So what the heck do I do?
I'm close to using the disc as a projectile.
CooJoe:
No Tutorial, or nothin'?
I did a quick, 30second Google search, with Morrowind+controls, and came up with this-
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/g/pc_games/elder_scrolls_iii_morrowind/controls.php
Key = move forward,
E Key = jump,
R Key = ready magic,
T Key = rest,
A Key = strafe left,
S Key = move back,
D Key = strafe right,
F Key = ready weapon,
J Key = journal,
- Key = previous spell,
= Key = next spell,
[ Key = previous weapon, ] Key = next weapon,
Tab Key = toggle view,
Caps Lock Key = toggle run,
Shift Key = run,
Ctrl Key = sneak,
F5 Key = quick save,
F9 Key = quick load,
F1 Key = quick menu,
1-9 Key = quick key,
Space Bar = activate,
0 Key = hand-to-hand,
Left Mouse Button = use,
Right Mouse Button = menu mode.
If that doesn't help
I WANNA SEE WHO CAN GET IT STUCK IN THE WALL!
estio:
I don't think Joe would get it stuck in the wall.
He'd make it through the wall.
As for the game itself, I've got a demo somewhere probably but I don't do too much on the RPGs.
Google could turn up some good info Joe, you never know. That's how I found the Cafe way back when I was just learning Tropico. In fact, there might be a whole galaxy of weirdos just like us waiting to be found.
Joe:
The basic control listing I've found, but it is more involved than those few.
I just shot a nasty note to ATI about the situation and got the usual robotic reply to refer to a FAQ.
Time for an even nastier note to remind them that a person should actually read the content of a tech help email before replying with a useless and irrelevant answer.
As for using google to hunt my way through the sites, I'm not keen on visiting literally thousands of fan sites for this game.
Robbo:
Quote:So what the heck do I do?
Coasters, interesting microwave explosions, frisbee, whatever you like Most OEM games I get, remain in their paper cases, or get passed onto friends.
Have you looked on the CD - most OEM games have a pdf manual somewhere on the CD?
I figure you've had a good look, but GameFAQ is always a good source, if you haven't tried already.
Quote:Time for an even nastier note to remind them that a person should actually read the content of a tech help email before replying with a useless and irrelevant answer.
Good luck on getting a reply on that - I'd be curious to know what they'd say
Quote:Dropping by the developer's site yields tons of robot help, but no online manual.
Gone are the days where the manual could be gotten online - its an anti-piracy thing
Mr.P:
Whilst I feel I should be drawn to online RPG's, the usual treadmill of gaining skills that are, frankly, pathetic puts me off.
But if RPG's with thousands of other players is your cup of tea, and you don't want to pay a penny for it (other than the 'phone bill) try www.runescape.com. Probably the best of the freebies, although you get what you pay for, if you get my drift.
Robbo:
I know Jorenne used to play a fair bit of runescape
CooJoe:
I played a little bit of rune scape, leveled up fairly quickly, but got bored with it, so I put it down.
Broomdalf:
Once you get the hang of it, Morrowind is a wonderful game. It is very deep and interactive, and there dozens of side quests to do, and several ways you can accomplish many things. (You can, I believe, "beat the game" by starting off, leveling up, then killing everyone on the map but one certain guy)
Anywho, moving on, I also play a good deal of runescape, it is a good game, and best of all, unlike any other 3d online rpg, it is free. I have been playing (though not constantly) since at latest August 2001, although not constantly. I am "zoro the cat". |

Hmm... A few words of absolutely neccessary advice:
1. Don't join the Fighters guild, at least on your first game. They have too many enemies, especially the thieves guild.
2. The first time you are able to capture either an Ascended Sleeper or ...Golden thingie with winged helmet, get some sort of item enchanted with constant effect levitation. I used pants.
And if anyone has any questions, I played a huge amount of the game once, (ended up heading temple, imperial cult, imperial legion, thieves guild, morag tong, mages guild, and telvanni I believe) and could answer many questions. |

I have never been able to get into magic and fantasy.
Are there any games like the ol' sci-fi RPG's... Traveler and Space Opera? |

No clue, never played them.
Oh, and another thing:
DO NOT wear ordinator (Indoril) Armor. Ever. Especially inside of Vivec. Any ordinator who sees you wearing it will try to kill you. If you kill him, another will soon spawn in his spot who will also try to kill you. It makes navigating the city really hard.
If you want good medium armor, orcish isn't that bad, especially if you get adam helm of tohan from the quest that comes with the plugin of its name from the official site, along with ebony mail. (drools)
Later on, if you have Tribunal, the medium armor of the guards in red is even better, i believe.
Just DON'T WEAR ORDINATOR ARMOR! |

I've been through most of the quests already once and started over when I bought the gold edition with the expansions.
I've figured out how far to run with the Fighter's Guild and still play all the others.
Once I become the Nevarrine again then I'm off to Mounhold and Solstiem.
My current character is just finishing all the Sadith Mora quests for the Fighter's, Thieves, and Mages Guilds.
Already finished the Balmora and Alderuun portions for those three.
Holding back on the main quest until I do the Thieves Guild for Vivec first and assume control.
Then I'll use the Alderuun Fighter's Guild master to let me assasinate all the other evil leaders of the Guild and take over that Guild too.
Then I'll pick a major House, probaly Hhallu, and run those through next.
I then knock out the main quest and cap it all with assuming control of the Mages Guild.
My ultimate armor is a mixmatch of potent items. Nothing like mixing the Boots of Blinding Speed with the Savior's Curias. All my stats will be around 125 to 150 by then. Everthing but my Orcish greaves and pauldrons are constant magic items.
And my final weapon as Nevarrine is Sunder.
One smack and everyone is toast.
One thing I did when I started this game was install Balmora Expanded mod from the major fan site. Doubles the size and triples the fun of the town. |

Curiass of the Savior's Hide is especially fun with Boots of Blinding Speed if you're a Breton. 110% magic resistance, baby.
Personally, I find Sunder too cheap to use, except while completing the main quest. When you nullify its Drain Fatigue, it's just too good.
For blunt weapon, I just use Skull Crusher.
What helmet do you use?
Bearclaw totally owns. |

Helm of Orem Bearclaw.
All my armor boosts stats somehow, excepting greaves and paudrons as they are too small to hold constant magic worth any value.
Same goes for Sunder. With Wraithguard it really boosts those attack stats.
I don't worry so much about the armor protection as all the boosts, combined with maxing stats and skills, lets you roll over anything. |

Oh, and I play a Redguard race under the Lady birthsign.
Nothing like a 55 longsword skill right at the start.
The race also has big immunities from poison and all diseases.
No running back to town mid adventure to fix some affliction is too nice. |

| House Telvanni gets you some nice greaves, Daedric greaves with 50 feather. They end up weighing only 4 pounds. |

Yeah. I will have to look at all those sites....
I was playing a battlemage yesterday for the fun of it. I found a tomb in a hillside and cast that cool Summon Ancient Ghost spell I start with.... He appeared inside the room beyond the closed door.... :D I heard all the sounds of the combat and when I opened the door the vampire was dead. |

Cheating in Morrowind.
My first time through, I played by the rules.
On my second start, I played with the construction set and juiced all the goodies.
Halfway through, it became a cakewalk. I had to slide the difficulty slider up to max just to worry about fights. But I did learn a few things.
While "fast travel" is handy, you still do a bunch of running around on foot.
So I just started a new game and will limit myself to a couple things.
The console commands: ra and tdt.
The ra command lets you move the npcs back to wehere they belong. Nothing like trying to get through a tightspot and have some npc block your way.
The tdt command is a great way to locate places that insist on being hard to find. Many of the quest FAQ's online give the tdt location and it helps you find them like using a map grid.
Juicing items. Only one for me. I went to the construction set and rebuilt the Boots of Blinding Speed. Took out the blindness, left the speed alone, added 30% night vision and water breathing.
This really allows you to enjoy wandering all over the island. I used to be so irritated at foot travel that I rarely wandered off the path that took me to my next quest location. Now I roam anywhere. And if I could figure a way to reduce the number of Cliff Racers (Argggggh!) then I'd do that too.
Now I've just got my new boots and am starting the various guild quests. I've set the difficulty slider back to normal and the game is entertaining again. |

Yeah, I have a few plug-ins installed. The only one that can really be considered cheap is a "private island" plug-in. I can put on a ring, and it transports me to a little island, that contains something that can warp me to Balmora, Sadrith Mora, Ald-ruhn, and Vivec. I really only abuse that though if I just have to quickly make it to a city for just 1 tiny thing for a quest, and I use the island for *some* centralized storage, namely alchemy ingrediants, important books, and Sanguine items.
And back to the Daedric Greaves thing, good luck fitting 50 feather into a pair. Dren, I believe, has some lying around in his house. Tell me if you get more than 25 feather onto them.
I love House Telvanni. It is sooo hard to get expelled, and you get the most spiffy artifacts. The eccentricity of virtually everyone in the house also adds to the effect. |
