Do you ever get those annoying little windows service messages? No not IM's from your buddies, but the ones that say you may be unprotected against this that and the other? (wish I had a screenshot here...)

Well here's a link to a handy, small, and best of all free program to shut these down and a lot of info on the service messages.

I used it and got no more of these annoyances. Combined with updated virus protection and a good spyware sniffer (adaware and spybot come to mind) you good 'ol pc is a lot safer out in the dirty internet!

XP sp2 has Messenger turned off by default; which is pretty annoying, because then I have to turn it back on for everyone here at work, so I can send server-shutdown announcements.

work is about the only use that I ever found for it, as it can be exploited as a pretty serious security hole.

Isn't it just a registry setting to flip it back on?

I dont think there is a registry setting... otherwise there would be a policy I could set to have it on. As it is, I have to remember to turn it on for every new workstation we get in.

For Home use, I agree that it is best turned off.

I'm assuming that this is Windows Messenger...used for network admins to talk back and forth to each other. Since you can only use it if you are on a domain pretty much everyone can turn it off. There is no registry setting for it but it is very easy to turn off. Right click My Computer > Manage > open Services and Applications > Services > scroll down to "Messenger" in the list. Right Click it and click Properties, then pull down the drop down menu for start up type and do disable. Easy.

Actually XP sp2 turns it off automatically. I need to turn it on for every computer I get to I can send out messages whenever we reboot a server.
