Wow, an ebooks user.
Sorry, I'm old school. I just buy new shelf units and keep stacking up the regular kind. |

I consider my book purchases as my first luxury after paying the essentials of life. I always scraped up enough money for my next book. Just ate cheap noodles that week instead when I was poor.
Now I've got a whole bedroom in my house devoted to my shelf units for books and then tucked around all the walls in the rest of the house. I figure I've got 25 or 30 of these things and I complain insufferably whenever I have to slap a new unit together and try to shoehorn it in around the walls. Thankfully, the kitchen and bathrooms are still book-free. But it's only a matter of time. :? |

It wasn't some kind of goal as much as a lifestyle. My "fix" needed about two books a week since I was a teen. One way or another I scrapped the money together to buy them. I mostly dragged them around in tons of boxes until I got a house later in life. Once that happened, I began to buy unassembled shelf units and pull the boxes out of storage to fill them as I finished them.
Most of all it needs books for a home library. So skip sweating the space and the shelves until the time is right and you have the ability. Just make your goal to always have enough money for your next book close to the time you finish your last one.
Or be like me and buy them 5 to 10 at a time. |

having real books is great, and i buy them every time i have money for them, i dont have enouth space to store them anymore, once i have my own apartmant/house i think it will be full of books, for now i have to settle with just few books a month, but once a year when we have big book fair i kinda buy a ton of books that i cant manage to read for the next few months ;)
right now i have about 50 books in the apartmant that i rent, but at my parents house i have a way more, they dont even want to consider to take them anymore :( |

Just box them up like I did for later. Stack the boxes in the closets, basements, and attics. If you make sure the boxes will avoid water then even modern wood pulp paper books will last a century. Plenty of time to get your act together.
As for the cost of books, I highly recommend used book stores. Great fun poking around and always a better price. I'm not a big "shopping" kind of person. I know what I want and go get it directly without wandering shops. Book shopping at used book stores and grocery shopping are my two exceptions to my normal habits. I'll happily spend a lot of time in both. |

Hey, I've been poor too. It was a sacrifice to get those books. No movies, no eating out, only music from the free airwaves. Books were my sole luxury. In fact, I would find ways to trim my necessities back to the bone to cover my books. Since my closets were full of book boxes I had little room for clothes. T-shirts, jeans, and a couple pair of shoes at most. I kept one good suit because you never know when you might need to dress nice. When my family asked what I wanted at Xmas and birthday, I asked for food donations and bookstore gift checks.
Being young and poor means deciding what you get and what you skip. If you are poor and want new pc's, clothes, books, Ipods, pc games, etcetera, then you are doomed to fail and guaranteed to stay poor.
Live on the basics and one small luxury to keep you sane while you train yourself to be valuable to an employer. Get valuable to a boss with money and you'll find yourself with all the toys you want at some point down the road. Get greedy and you'll blow it for sure.
Don't look at what others have. Remember that coveting is against a Commandment for a good reason. You will always ruin your life if you covet more than what you can provide yourself.
Yeah, being poor sucks. But that's life. |

lmao, actually i'm above average with my salary in Lithuania :P
and i am a greedy bitch!
I wanna travel, cause i have never been in another country...
I don't say right now, but sometimes i think that if you put all in one thing for example only books, you become one sided, i don't want my dream to come true, cause then i will be ruled by it :P *women logic*
Anywayz all will come little by little "D |

Travel doesn't require much money. Only if you want to travel in comfort and luxury to exotic locales. I traveled a lot while poor at no more expense than my usual daily expenses at home. Buses are cheap, as are hostels and food from the market. You might not get overseas, but you live with land access to both Europe and Asia. Plenty to see in those continents.
You can label yourself as greedy, but that's just another word for coveting. Wanting more out of life is one thing, but wanting specifics out of your reach, is what I was talking about.
I don't buy into the "female logic" nonsense. I find it as yet another excuse to avoid the obvious realities. Logic is cold brutal fact and isn't based on gender. A more appropriate term is "rationalization". You don't serve yourself well by doing this. It would be better to find a way to push yourself further up the money ladder. It's not bad-greedy to find a way to legally earn more money because you are making yourself more valuable to society. It is good-greedy. If you quit focusing on the toys and build towards a better income then you get those other extras by default. It's really the only way to get all you want. |

Lmao that's the thing i DONT have any toys lolz :) and all i have is presents, my pc, tv are from my parents, i have never even bought a cell phone, i mean i con't have camera or that sort of thing at all, i duh i don't have even with what chake photos... hehe
I understand it's all about priorities, and i'm working towords that, but you know, it's not America in here, i worked my ass off for 15 hours a day to get this place, and it is considered good, tho i still work 12 hours a day hehe....
It's all not so easy
And about traveling, yeah LIth geographical place is very good, but travel, like if i want to go to another country not Baltic but in Europe it would still cost me almost all i earn, and i wouldn't go for a month, i would have to live when i would come back, so traveling would be hard in money phase, and since i have no education *higher i mean* i would have to work for another 1.5 year to get enough money... Yeah i could save, but then my work and both my mental state suffers a lot, and i mean really a lot, i can't focus, and i much need that in my work... *stops writing* blah it's all excuses...
Europe doesn't atract me, i wanna go to Asia, esp Japan |

Hey, I know how it is at this time of life for you. Like trying to shovel snow up a hill.
But I got out of the military at age 23 and it took me 8 years to work hard as a mule to get my college degree at age 31. Considering the military was no fun, the teenage years were poor for the family, and I still had a few years after college working my way up then I can tell you of my 43 years that more than half were tough work with little reward.
So while you may hear this all the time, you have to accept that the struggle takes a long time. A looooong time. By the time you finally have money you will not be young. Life will beat it out of you if you want the real rewards. There is no magic way out unless you have a super talent. The rest of us just have to shovel the snow uphill until we get it to the top of the mountain.
If it makes you feel any better, I don't have a camera or a cell phone. I can afford them but I hate them. Cameras are a pain to supply and I remember everywhere I see just fine. Why would I bother with pictures for others? Let them go see the same thing I did and quit pestering me. I have had several cell phones and pagers over the years. But I've found that people keep bugging me when I don't want to be bothered. Let them call my house and leave a message or send an email. I'll get back with them later when I feel like it. Last thing I want is my boss calling me at home or my girlfriend calling me at work.
I don't even have cable or satellite TV service. What little TV I watch is covered fine by the free airwaves.
You will find that after working very hard for these "extra toys" that you really don't want them. I don't have a bunch of expensive clothes either. Just a couple good suits for emergencies.
I do understand travel, though. But trust me, you never get rich enough to see it all unless you become a multi-millionaire. I make terrific money now, but I still can't afford to travel whenever and wherever I want. I have to plan, budget, and save the same way as when I was dirt poor. I just don't have to save as long.
I knew this one old hippie who loved to travel. He was born in LA and went to auditions for TV commercials. He got a few small parts that send him a small check every month for the year. Only a few hundred dollars per month. That done, he goes to car dealerships and offers to deliver cars cross country for special orders. And for 11 months a year he just delivers cars across America and takes his time. He sleeps at hostels and keeps making friends everywhere so he can avoid hostels when he comes back. In March he heads back home on a bus and does a few more small TV commercial spots to line up next year's allowance. In April he's back at the dealers to deliver cars.
You see, his whole life is traveling America. He earns a few thousand a year and stretches it like crazy. He's a bit of a moocher, but he's friendly and polite. I met him at a holiday party where he snuck in for the free beer and told me about his life. I was sure he was lying, but told him to call me next time he hit town and I'd buy him another beer. That was 10 years ago. Now I see him for a short week almost every year. I let him stay at my house instead of a hostel. When he visits, he cleans my house in exchange for me providing roof and food. I also get the greatest stories from him. Barely more than $20 in his pocket at any time and he travels all year long. It's his mission in life and he loves it. What he owns fits into 2 backpacks. He's in his late 30's with no home, few belongings, little education, and loving every minute of it.
So don't say you need money to travel. He earns less than you do and he's paying American prices to live. It's more about priorities and planning. You could live in Japan if you wanted to. They pay good money for people to teach them English and Euro languages. They even fly you there and give you a small apartment. You won't get rich, but you'll see Asia around Japan. Decide where you want to go and find a way to make it pay or break even. |
