I ran across three things recently, first, for all you people with broadband, possbily not much hard drive space, and a gmail account (I have 50 invites if anyone wants one) there is good news gmail drive creates a virtual drive that utilizes the space in gmail (over 2 gigs and counting) like another hard drive. Unfortnately, since it is online you do have to upload your stuff so broadband, I would say, is required for big files. You can download it free here . Second, if you have ever had the problem of running over the attachment limits on your emails or just wanted some quick space to store some stuff for a few days then www.yousendit.com is great. You upload your file(s) (up to one gig) and they store it on their servers and send an email to whoever you want and give a link to download it. No sign up is necessary either. Third, Adobe bought Macromedia. For people that don't use photoshop or flash this is of no importance. But for the rest of us this coul be the best thing since....well something really good. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/19/technology/19adobe.html . Also two sites that were very interesting were http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/research/recording_head/pr/PerpendicularAnimation.html and http://abstract.cs.washington.edu/~renacer/ascii-matrix.html.gz

Yep, I had to call and twist his arm.

I had told him to mention this stuff in Robbo's thread.

Alas, while quite bright, my nephew can be a hardhead.

It's probably in the genes.

But while he wasn't very verbose about the topics, they all sounded facinating. Take the time to look at the stuff. That sneaky workaround for emailing huge files is terrific.

As for Abobe and Macromedia, think of the potential combinations of Flash, PDF, and Photoshop. Inventive compression in action.
The third item is a long load on dialup and is a pretty hokey music cartoon, but it is an easy explanation of a facinating new technology in storage. Imagine a handheld mp3 player that held tens of thousands of songs! Put up with the load time and cartoon and the techy in you will be amazed.

The last item is a cool little download of around 500meg of entertainment. I won't spoil the surprise. It's a Winrar compressed file. If you can't open it then go grab Winrar off the internet. It has a free trial period and is a terrific compression tool.

If you like this stuff then speak up and get my nephew off his slacker ass with a bit of flattery. I can only slap him so often as he's growing bigger than me.

Hmmmm.... storing alot of data online is not that great an idea, especially if you plan on updating it frequently.

Most broadband has pretty bad upload speeds. Mine for instance can approach 3mb download, but the upload is usually no better than 128kb, only twice as fast as a good dialup. You can get better upload speeds, but be prepared to spend alot of money for it.

He found the trick when he had a large file to transfer and direct email attachment was impractical. In essence he was grabbing a file sitting at a pc at school and wanted to send it home. But it was to large for standard email.

So he went hunting and found the two workarounds at gmail and yousendit. The storage option with gmail was merely an extrapolation of the potential. But it does help him. As a graphics student, he fills any HD you give him rapidly. Poor kid is always hunting for yet another place to dump stuff.

What he needs is for the HD storage companies to begin stuffing more than 74gig in those 10k or 15k rpm SRaid drives.

And hoping his uncle will spring for it.

With an upload speed of 128kb, it would take 2-billion / 13-thousand seconds to upload 2-gig of data. that is 154,000 seconds, or 42-hours. Not practical, even with home-broadband.
