So I'm googling info on the Courland Pocket defensive by Germany in Latvia late in the war for something I'm commenting on elsewhere and stumble across this.
http://www.germanhistory.net/index.html
It's the extremely fascination story of a German liaison soldier who goes to the Eastern Front and is still there when the war ends in "Fortress Courland". It's about how he decides not to go into the POW camps with all the rest by sneaking back to Germany.
Actually, it's more of a broader biography that covers his life, but is mainly focused on his service time. This guy was definitely not a true believer of the cause.
It's just a fascinating read and not terribly long. About the equivalent of a mere 50 page novel. He's broken it into a couple dozen segment that are lined on the left side in English and German on the right. It's definitely worth the few hours read. |
