I will be planning on playing. My suggestion is to keep things simple and have every battle fight to the death. But that is just an idea, im sure other people have better ideas.

Another Idea I had was to not allow battle with another county and moving into it in the same turn. By splitting those two actions into separate turns we eliminate most of the anomalies... Also, in that case, battle-to-the-death is not neccessary unless two or more players try to move into the same unoccupied country.

Rules look good. They're simple enough that there won't be any arguments, plus it's a good test of the program.

Brf, what are your limits in regards to play-maps?

Will maps like this be possible some day?

Maybe.... but it took a while to draw the current 12-country map. All the coordinates for each little corner is kept in a database, so the map is drawn dynamically each time..... Your map would take a long time to break down into coordinates for each country.

For the next test game, after this one, I was considering using Baron's idea of a bunch -- maybe hundreds -- of little square areas. Something like that would not require a table of coordinates or a table of possible moves from each country. Therefore the setup and programming would be much simpler. Also, with hundreds of little areas, the game would be more realistic.... and require real thought for strategy.... Here is a sample of a map that is elementary to setup and program: http://home.insightbb.com/~b.fermanich/Graph5.htm

Also, the user-interface would be much slicker.... You could click on the actual map to bring up the page for each area, not requiring the clumsey drop-down box.

Sounds good... will "objectives" (cities. towns, points that have a value in the game) be part of such a map?

BTW, I cannot get the hang of the in-game message thingie

In the sample -- two posts above -- the outlined squares in each country would be industrial zones. The platoons recruited by each country would appear in them.

What problem are you having with the messages? You pick your recipient from the dropdown (or leave it on "all", type your message in the box, and then click the "Message to" button.

I was doing an "all"... and clicked on the message button.

I will try again.

OK... I like, curious about any other possible map "features?"

heheheh... you know all games acquire a "Wish List?"

Actually, I was curious if the new map would support icons such as this:

FACTORY/INDUSTRIAL ZONE (?)

I have been playing around with designing map icons lately.

The test-map I was displaying can support images .... but that might displace the "unit-strength" number. I suppose the icon can be displayed as a background image in the cell.... That would probably work nifty.

Hmmm..... on second thought..... it might be hard to see who owns it without the background color

Brf, I was reading a book on medieval warfare and something can to me. This is just food for thought... down the road.

Since the forum has a medieval/age of chivalry theme... why not set the game in this time-period. You could call it something like... War of the Barons.

Each country would represent a barony... the square (IZ) would be the Castle.

Platoons would be called... Conroys. These were small, mixed force units that were commonly used in "small" wars.

A player that controlled 2-5 baronies would be allowed to use the title of Count. Any player that controlled 6-11 baronies would be considered a Duke.

The player who ends up in control of all 12, would be the winner and styled... the King for bragging rights.

Sounds a bit (yes, just a bit) like LOTR (the realms, not the ring :)), with the various barons fighting for control of the counties, and then the kingdom - and I loved LOTR, so sign me up for that 8)

A short game might be one where victory is awarded to the first player to control seven baronies.

The victor could also be awarded the coveted... VICTOR'S CROWN:

Some icon similar to this... would be displayed in a player's sig area.

You know guys, every time I look at the game area... I'm amazed at what Brf has accomplished :)
