This is going to be like an extension of my livejournal so don't be surprised to see similarity between the two. I may use it for more essay type materials though as opposed to anything else.

Well just to update you, I got a temp job at the college here doing A/V setups for meetings and such. It's not bad actually since you do stuff instead of just sit at a desk all day, plus when we aren't busy we can loaf. Dress code is lax as well.

A little more elaboration...

It's been a while since I've updated, so here goes...

I got myself a job through the temporary pool at college to be an A/V tech. Basically if there is a meeting and they need to do a Powerpoint presentation and need a projector to put it up on screen, I'm the guy who makes the magic happen. It's kind of cool to be honest. The job pays crap (ten bucks and change per hour) and the hours are horrible. Seriously, one day it was 2:30 to 10:00 pm, the next was 7 am to 1 pm. There is no shift differential and yes I do work weekends. The good things? It's not a stupid office job where I do goddamned data entry all day like the last temp assignment I had. Good christ that job sucked ass. Anyway, it's generally easy to deal with and to be honest the tech part isn't that difficult, it's more customer service to be honest.

A couple of anecdotes. Sometimes people are edgy and want a little encouragement so they will hire us to "operate" the event, meaning we sit there and listen to the speeches they make in case there's a technical problem. If the equipment were to fail, we are instantly on the scene to fix it. So far I got to listen to some senior mechanical engineers describe some inventions they made which sounded dreadful to my liberal arts ears, but was actually quite interesting. I also got to listen to the secretary of energy for the state of PA talk about energy independence. Again, quite interesting. Of course there are other benefits as well. I can scrounge for food and drink at these things and once in a while I might even snag a t-shirt or something.

The best part of the job? The dress code. I can wear one of my lovely lovely pieces of jewelry and it's cool. I don't need to dress up at all. Hell, on my first day I went in with khakis and a polo shirt and was overdressed. My coworkers seem pretty cool. They are a bit eccentric, but so am I so what can I say really. The temp opening happened because the guy working the job got a better job elsewhere. If/when they post the job formally, I'm applying for it because then I'd be employed full time and eligible for benefits. I'd almost definitely get a raise as well.
