Well I usually like the comfort of the familiar, but reading an article about Firefox, on top of all the recomendations from friends, tipped me over the edge and I think I like this new browser. :)

http://firefox.com

My ftp site doesn't seem to want to load in this browser, and the blinking cursor covers up whichever letter you typed last, making it hard to see if you just inputed a "d" or a "c" sometimes.

Here's a screenshot of the browser with one of the cool skins available: http://conceptstudios.us/bh/screenshot.gif

Its nice to be able to tab similar pages inside one browser, I know I always open multiple pages when googling and this is a good way to organize them.

My nephew has been going ballistic that I haven't switched over yet.

He says it's far greater than any browzer out there.

I love Firefox, and have thunderbird, too. They're just like Nutscrape, but a bit more stable, and don't have the AOL tie ins.

My ONLY irk is that I can't do the ftp iwth Firfox, I have to use IE for that.

Version 2.0 I guess.

I don't know about that, but it does have some distinct advantages, and for a v.1.0, I'm pretty impressed.

I've been using it for a while and it is generally pretty good. For some reason I can't view flash with it (although you can argue that is a good thing) and it gets a little quirky at times.

You'll want a few extensions though.

AdBlock - You can set up wildcards to block annoying gifs, flash objects, or pictures.

User Agent Switcher - Let's you get in sites that insist only IE users can access it.

bbCode - Allows you to highlight text and put both BB Code (such as on this board, and HTML more easily. Bold, underline, etc.

BugmeNot - Lets you into sites that require "logging in" to view content like the NY Times.

Card Games - 14 solitaire card games to pass the time.

Configuration Mania - Lets you tinker with hidden settings.

Dict - Dictionary that opens up a window when you highlight a word.

He'll be back on Monday.

I've been using firefox for almost a year now and absolutely love it. (Anything to leave microsoft!!)

Here's the link to the extensions page https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/?application={ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}

You can also change the appearance with different themes (I use the cat theme - I believe it's called redcats)

I'm on a new machine. I had my Firefox set up how I liked it. I wasn't looking forward to trying to get all my bookmarks, etc., set up again. I had thought to just move the program. It didn't work. Out of desperation, I hit the FAQ to find out where my settings were.

http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile This Url saved me. Read the whole thing. And backup your settings when you change them drastically.

Just a followup to let you know that most flash works with 1.02.

It's good to see everyone enjoying firefox. Since I came on the net yesterday, it was the first thing I downloaded after a clean windows install and all the critical updates. I haven't done all my add-ons and theme changes yet, but the day is yet early.

Not to change the subject but has anyone used, are using or played with the 'Safari' browser?

From the "What's your homepage" topic in the Great Hall: Quote: FireFox has a separate search field, so I can open a new tab, go over to the search field, and Google whatever it is. You can specify which search engine you use, I think Google is the default. I have more, I'll take it to the Firefox thread in the Lab.

While I was composing that post, I was curious what would happen if I clicked on the G in that field. There's a drop down menu that also has a direct connection to dictionary.com, the only site I use every day, but don't have bookmarked*. Heck, now I just have to choose Dictionary.com for that field, and enter the desired word. It also has Amazon.com and some others, and you can add your own. This is really neat. Now I wonder what other things I can find about Firefox.

*I just type the "di" in the address bar, and it fills the rest for me.

I'm told by my nephew that he set up the address bar that way.

He types a word right into browser address window and it automatically shunts to google.

I prefer having two separate "bars" for websites and search, so I can keep refining a search while surfing on other things. Also, sometimes when you type an URL in the search bar you get a Google page and not the desired site.

I wasn't very impressed with Safari when I used it. Though it was only twice though, so not a perfect review.
